VO2 Max: The Fitness Number That Predicts Longevity
VO2 max sounds like athlete jargon, but it’s one of the strongest predictors of how long and how well you’ll live — and you can improve it.
What it is
VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during hard exercise. A higher number means a stronger heart, lungs and muscles — and it tracks closely with lower risk of disease.
How to raise it
- Base: lots of easy Zone 2 cardio builds the engine.
- Ceiling: once a week, add hard intervals — e.g. 4 × 4 minutes near-max with 3 minutes easy between.
- Consistency over months matters far more than any single session.
You don’t need a lab. Most fitness watches estimate VO2 max, and the trend over time is what counts — not the exact figure.
Quick answers
How long to see improvement?
Usually 6–12 weeks of consistent cardio, mixing easy volume with a weekly hard session.
Does lifting improve VO2 max?
A little, but cardio is the main driver. Do both for overall health.
