Japanese Interval Walking: 3 Minutes Slow, 3 Minutes Fast
Developed by Japanese researchers, this simple walk alternates hard and easy blocks — and in studies it beat steady walking for fitness, blood pressure and leg strength.
The routine
Alternate 3 minutes of brisk walking (you can talk but not comfortably) with 3 minutes of easy walking. Repeat five times for a 30-minute session, about 4 days a week.
Why it beats a normal walk
- The brisk blocks push your heart and lungs harder than a steady stroll.
- The easy blocks let you recover so you can go hard again.
- No gym, no equipment, low joint stress — easy to keep up.
No fancy watch needed — use the talk test. Brisk = short sentences only. Easy = full conversation.
Quick answers
How fast should the fast intervals be?
Around 70–80% of your max effort — challenging but sustainable for 3 minutes, not a sprint.
Is it enough for weight loss?
It helps, but weight loss still needs a calorie deficit. Use it as your cardio and control your food with a plan.
