How to Start Running (Couch to 5K)
The reason most beginners quit running is doing too much too soon. The run-walk method fixes that — and gets you to 5K.
The run-walk method
Alternate short runs with walking, and slowly shift the ratio. E.g. start with 1 min run / 2 min walk × 6, three times a week, and each week run a little more. In 6–8 weeks most people reach a continuous 5K.
Avoid the classic mistakes
- Going too fast — run slow enough to talk.
- Skipping rest days — your joints need to adapt.
- Bad shoes — get proper running shoes.
- Ignoring strength — strong legs and glutes prevent injury.
Run slower than feels natural. "Too slow" for beginners is usually exactly the right pace to build up without injury.
Quick answers
How often should a beginner run?
3 times a week with rest days between lets your body adapt and reduces injury risk.
Is running good for weight loss?
It burns calories and builds fitness, but fat loss still needs a calorie deficit. Pair it with your diet.
