How to Do Your First Push-Up
The push-up is the ultimate upper-body bodyweight test. If you can’t do one yet, this progression will get you there.
The progression
- Incline push-ups — hands on a table or wall; lower the surface as you get stronger.
- Knee push-ups — full push-up on your knees.
- Negatives — lower yourself slowly from the top on your toes.
- Then your first full push-up.
Form cues
Keep a straight line head-to-heels, hands ~shoulder-width, elbows ~45° (not flared), and brace your core like a moving plank. Practise often — frequency builds this fast.
Train push-ups a little most days (grease the groove) — the skill and strength climb quickly with frequency.
Quick answers
Why can’t I do a push-up?
Usually not enough chest/tricep/core strength yet. Incline and knee push-ups build it in a few weeks.
Are knee push-ups effective?
Yes — they’re a great stepping stone that builds real pressing strength toward full push-ups.
