How to Do Your First Pull-Up
The pull-up is the ultimate bodyweight badge. If you can’t do one yet, this progression gets you there.
The progression
- Negatives: jump to the top, lower yourself slowly (5 s). 3–5 reps.
- Band-assisted pull-ups: loop a band under your feet for help.
- Rows: build pulling strength with bodyweight or band rows.
Dial it in
Train pulling 2–3× a week, and getting a bit leaner helps a lot — there’s simply less weight to pull. Most beginners earn their first rep in 4–8 weeks.
Grease the groove: do a few easy assisted reps often through the week. Frequency builds this skill fast.
Quick answers
Why can’t I do a pull-up?
Usually a mix of not enough back strength and extra bodyweight. Train negatives and lean out a little.
Are chin-ups easier?
Yes — the underhand grip uses more biceps, so start there if pull-ups feel impossible.
