How to Do a Proper Plank (and Why)
The plank is simple but easy to do badly. Done right, it builds the deep core strength that protects your back and boosts every lift.
Perfect plank form
- Forearms under shoulders, body in a straight line head-to-heels.
- Squeeze glutes and brace abs — don’t let hips sag or pike up.
- Keep your neck neutral (look at the floor).
- Breathe — don’t hold your breath.
How long?
Quality beats endless duration. 3 sets of a hard 20–40 seconds, fully braced, beats a sloppy 3-minute hold. Progress by adding tension or harder variations (leg lifts, reaches), not just more minutes.
A shaking, fully-braced 30-second plank does more than a relaxed 3-minute one. It’s about tension, not time.
Quick answers
How long should I hold a plank?
Hard 20–40 second sets are plenty. Marathon holds mostly test boredom, not core strength.
Do planks give you abs?
They build core strength, but visible abs need low body fat via a calorie deficit.
