How Many Sets Per Muscle Per Week?
Volume — your weekly hard sets per muscle — is one of the biggest drivers of growth. Here’s the sweet spot.
The numbers
- Beginners: ~10 hard sets per muscle per week grows well.
- Intermediates: ~12–20 sets, split across 2 sessions.
- Beyond ~20 has diminishing (and recovery-costly) returns for most.
Count what counts
A "hard set" means taken close to failure (1–3 reps in reserve). Junk half-effort sets don’t count. Split the volume over the week rather than one brutal session.
More isn’t always better. If recovery, sleep or joints suffer, you’ve gone past your useful volume — pull back.
Quick answers
Is 5 sets enough?
It can maintain and even build a bit, especially for beginners — but ~10+ tends to grow faster.
Can I do all sets in one day?
Splitting across 2 sessions per muscle usually beats one long session for quality and recovery.
