Rep Ranges: How Many Reps for Muscle vs Strength
The old "3–5 for strength, 8–12 for size" rule is roughly right — but muscle grows across a wide range if you push hard.
The ranges
- Strength: 3–6 reps, heavier, longer rest.
- Muscle: 6–15 reps is the classic sweet spot — but 5–30 all builds muscle when taken near failure.
- Endurance: 15+ reps.
What really matters
Effort and progressive overload matter more than the exact number. Mix a few heavier sets and some higher-rep sets — both grow muscle and it keeps training joint-friendly.
You don’t have to live in one rep range. Heavy compounds + moderate accessories is a great, sustainable combo.
Quick answers
Do high reps build muscle?
Yes — sets of 15–30 taken close to failure build muscle well, and are easier on joints.
Are low reps only for strength?
They’re best for strength, but they build muscle too. Variety across ranges works nicely.
