How Long to Rest Between Sets
Rest between sets isn’t "wasted time" — it’s what lets you lift hard enough on the next set to actually grow.
The guidelines
- Strength / heavy compounds: 2–5 minutes.
- Muscle growth: 1.5–3 minutes.
- Small isolation moves: ~60–90 seconds is fine.
Don’t rush
Cutting rest too short tanks your reps and load, which reduces the quality of each set. Rest enough to give a strong effort — quality reps beat a faster, sloppier workout.
Short on time? Superset non-competing muscles (e.g. back and chest) to save time without shortchanging rest on your big lifts.
Quick answers
Does more rest build more muscle?
Enough rest to lift hard does. Very short rest can slightly reduce growth on heavy work.
Is 30 seconds enough?
Only for small isolation moves. Big lifts need more to maintain performance.
