How to Strengthen Your Knees
Your knees are only as healthy as the muscles supporting them. Strengthening those muscles is one of the best things you can do to prevent knee pain and injury.
A note first
If you have an existing knee injury or ongoing pain, see a professional before starting — this is general information, not medical advice (disclaimer).
Knee-supporting exercises
- Quads: squats (to comfortable depth), leg extensions, wall sits, step-ups.
- Hamstrings & glutes: glute bridges, RDLs, hamstring curls — balance the quads.
- Calves and hips: calf raises and hip strengthening support knee alignment.
- Progress gradually, use good form, and don’t push through sharp pain.
Strong glutes and hips are key — weak hips let the knee cave, causing pain (knee pain when squatting).
Quick answers
How do I strengthen weak knees?
Strengthen the surrounding muscles — quads, hamstrings, glutes and hips — with squats, glute bridges, wall sits and step-ups, progressing gradually.
Is squatting bad for your knees?
Done with good form and sensible load, squatting strengthens the knees. Poor form or too much load too soon is what causes problems.
