The Glute Bridge: A Perfect Beginner Glute Exercise

The glute bridge is the perfect starting point for building stronger glutes — no equipment, easy to learn, and a stepping stone to the loaded hip thrust.

How to do a glute bridge

  1. Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat and hip-width, close to your glutes.
  2. Drive through your heels and lift your hips up.
  3. Squeeze your glutes hard at the top — body in a straight line from knees to shoulders.
  4. Don’t overarch your lower back; keep ribs down.
  5. Lower under control and repeat.

Why and how to progress

The glute bridge wakes up and strengthens lazy, desk-bound glutes — drive through the heels, squeeze at the top. Then graduate to hip thrusts.

Quick answers

What does the glute bridge work?

Primarily the glutes, with some hamstring and core involvement. It’s excellent for glute activation and beginner glute strength.

Glute bridge vs hip thrust?

The glute bridge is the floor-based, often bodyweight version; the hip thrust (back on a bench, usually weighted) is the loaded progression.
