How to Do Step-Ups (Simple Leg Builder)
Step-ups are a simple, joint-friendly leg builder you can do with just a bench or sturdy step — great for legs, glutes and balance, and easy to scale.
How to do a step-up
- Stand facing a knee-height (or lower) bench/step.
- Place one whole foot flat on the step.
- Drive through that heel to stand up on the step — minimise pushing off the back foot.
- Step back down under control, same leg or alternating.
- Keep your torso fairly upright.
Why they’re great
- Build quads and glutes plus single-leg strength and balance.
- Fix left-right imbalances.
- Often gentler on the knees than deep squats/lunges.
- Scale easily — bodyweight, then hold dumbbells; higher step = harder.
- Perfect for home workouts.
Step-ups are an underrated, knee-friendly leg builder — drive through the top-foot heel and don’t cheat by pushing off the back foot.
Quick answers
What do step-ups work?
Quads and glutes, plus single-leg strength and balance. They also help fix left-right imbalances and are gentle on the knees.
How high should the step be?
Start around knee height or lower and drive through the top foot. A higher step is harder — progress as your strength and balance improve.
