Cardio Before or After Weights?
If you do both in one session, the order matters — and it depends entirely on which goal you care about most.
The simple rule
- Strength or muscle is the priority? Lift first — you want to be fresh for the weights. Do cardio after.
- Endurance is the priority? Do cardio first.
- Best of all: separate them (different times or days) so neither drains the other.
Why it matters
Hard cardio before lifting fatigues your legs and reduces the quality of your strength work. A light 5–10 minute warm-up is fine — it’s hard cardio before lifting that costs you. Save the tough cardio for after or a separate slot.
For most people chasing muscle and fat loss, lift first, then do easy cardio or steps — or walk on separate days entirely.
Quick answers
Does cardio kill gains?
No — moderate cardio doesn’t harm muscle if you eat and train enough. Just don’t exhaust yourself with cardio right before lifting.
Can I do them on the same day?
Yes — lift first if muscle/strength matters. Separating them by a few hours is even better.
