Why Calves Are Stubborn (and How to Grow Them)
Calves are famously stubborn — they’re used to constant walking, so it takes a real, focused effort to grow them.
Why they resist
Your calves work all day, every day, so they’re adapted to endurance. To grow them you need to give them a stimulus above their daily normal: more volume, heavier loads, and a full stretch.
How to grow them
- Train them 2–4× a week with real volume.
- Use a full range — deep stretch at the bottom, full squeeze at the top.
- Mix straight-leg (standing) and bent-leg (seated) raises.
- Pause at the stretch; don’t bounce.
Genetics set your calf potential, but almost everyone under-trains them. More frequency and a full stretch is the fix.
Quick answers
Why won’t my calves grow?
Usually too little volume and half-range bouncing. Train them often, heavy, and through a full stretch.
How often should I train calves?
They recover fast — 2–4 sessions a week is well tolerated.
