The 5x5 Workout Program (Simple Strength for Beginners)
If you want to get strong without overthinking it, the classic 5×5 is one of the most effective beginner programs ever made. Here’s the plan.
How 5x5 works
You do 5 sets of 5 reps on a handful of big compound lifts, 3 days a week, and add a little weight every session. It’s built on pure progressive overload — simple, brutal and highly effective for beginners.
Two alternating workouts:
- A: Squat, Bench Press, Barbell Row
- B: Squat, Overhead Press, Deadlift (deadlift usually 1×5)
Who it suits
- Great for: beginners wanting strength and a simple plan.
- Add weight each session while you can; when you stall, repeat or deload.
- Nail form first — the weights climb fast.
- Later, more variety (a PPL or upper/lower split) adds muscle-building volume.
5×5 works because it’s simple and progressive — show up, add weight, repeat. Perfect for your first months of lifting.
Quick answers
Is 5x5 good for building muscle?
It builds strength and solid muscle for beginners. For maximum size later, add higher-rep accessory volume.
How long should I run 5x5?
Until progress stalls repeatedly — often a few months. Then switch to a more varied split with more volume.
