What to Eat Before a Workout
Eat right before training and you’ll lift harder and last longer. Eat wrong (or too close) and you’ll feel it.
The formula
Aim for carbs + some protein, low fat and fibre, eaten 1–3 hours before. Carbs fuel the session; protein supports muscle; keeping fat/fibre low avoids stomach trouble.
Easy Indian options
- Banana + a few nuts or a scoop of whey.
- Poha or upma with a boiled egg.
- Curd rice or roti + dal.
- Short on time? A banana or a date 20–30 min before works.
Training fasted is fine for easy sessions, but for a hard lift, some carbs beforehand noticeably improves performance.

A small carb snack (banana, dates) helps for hard sessions. Easy cardio can be done fasted if you prefer.
How long before should I eat?
A full meal 2–3 hours before; a light snack 30–60 minutes before.
