Quinoa: Benefits and Is It Worth It?
Quinoa earned "superfood" status for being a grain with complete protein. It’s genuinely nutritious — but is it worth the premium price? Let’s be honest.
What makes quinoa good
- A complete protein (all essential amino acids) — rare for a plant food.
- More protein and fibre than white rice.
- Gluten-free, with magnesium, iron and other minerals.
The honest take for India
Quinoa is nutritious, but it’s often expensive and imported. You don’t need it — a plate of dal + rice also forms a complete protein, cheaply and locally, and Indian millets (ragi, jowar, bajra) are excellent too. Quinoa is a nice option if you enjoy it and can afford it, not a requirement. Use it like any grain — mind the portion.
Quick answers
Is quinoa good for weight loss?
It’s a nutritious, protein-and-fibre-rich grain that fits a fat-loss diet — but it’s no more magic than other whole grains. Mind the portion.
Is quinoa better than rice?
It has more protein and fibre, but it’s pricier. Dal with rice, or millets, give similar benefits far more cheaply.
