The Overhead Press: Build Strong Shoulders
Pressing a weight straight overhead is one of the best tests — and builders — of true upper-body strength.
The technique
- Bar/dumbbells at shoulder height, grip just outside shoulders.
- Brace your core and squeeze your glutes — no big backward lean.
- Press straight up; move your head slightly back so the bar clears your chin, then bring it "through the window" at the top.
- Lock out with the weight over your mid-foot.
Tips
Keep your ribs down and abs tight to protect your lower back. If standing feels unstable, the seated version is a great, strict option.
A weak overhead press often means a weak core and upper back — bracing hard usually adds instant strength.
Quick answers
Standing or seated overhead press?
Standing builds more full-body stability; seated is stricter and easier on the lower back. Both are effective.
Why can’t I press overhead?
Often core bracing, shoulder mobility, or simply needing to build the strength gradually.
