Getting Back Into Working Out After a Break
Life happens and training stops. The good news: restarting is far easier than starting from scratch — your body remembers.
Start easy on purpose
Resist the urge to pick up where you left off. Begin at 50–60% of your old volume and weight for the first week or two — you’ll be sore enough as it is, and this prevents injury.
Muscle memory is real
Thanks to muscle memory, previously-trained muscle comes back much faster than it took to build. Be patient for 2–3 weeks and you’ll rebound quickly. Focus on rebuilding the habit first, intensity second.
Quick answers
How fast will I get back?
With muscle memory, often within a few weeks to a couple of months, much faster than the original build.
Where should I start?
Light — about half your previous loads and volume — then build back up over 2–3 weeks.
