Foam Rolling: Does It Actually Work?
Foam rolling won’t melt fat or "release fascia" like the myths claim — but it’s a cheap, useful tool for feeling better.
What it really does
Rolling temporarily improves range of motion and can reduce the feeling of soreness. Think of it as a self-massage that makes movement feel easier — not a deep tissue miracle.
How to use it
- Before training: 30–60 s per tight area to loosen up.
- After: gentle rolling to ease soreness.
- Slow and steady — don’t grind on a painful spot or on your lower back/joints.
Rolling feels good and helps a little — but sleep, protein and easy movement do far more for recovery.
Quick answers
Does foam rolling break up knots?
No — that’s a myth. It temporarily improves mobility and eases the sensation of tightness.
When should I foam roll?
Either before to loosen up or after to ease soreness — both are fine.
