Flexible Dieting (IIFYM): Eat What You Like

Flexible dieting (IIFYM) says no food is banned — as long as it fits your daily calories and macros. It’s freeing, with one caveat.

How it works

You set targets for calories and protein, then eat any foods that fit them. A square of chocolate or some rice isn’t "bad" — it’s just numbers on your day. This kills the guilt-and-binge cycle that rigid diets cause.

The one rule

Follow the 80/20 principle: ~80% of your food from nutritious whole foods (for fibre, vitamins and fullness), ~20% for whatever you enjoy. All-treats-that-fit will leave you hungry and undernourished even at the right calories.

Flexible dieting isn’t "eat junk and get lean." It’s mostly whole foods + room for treats, so you actually stick to it.

Quick answers

Can I eat anything on IIFYM?

Within your calories and protein, yes — but keep ~80% whole foods for health and fullness.

Is flexible dieting good for beginners?

Yes — it teaches portions and prevents the restrict-binge cycle, making dieting sustainable.
