The Face Pull: Best Exercise for Shoulder Health
The face pull is one of the most valuable "prehab" exercises — it builds the rear delts and upper back, improves posture, and keeps your shoulders healthy for pressing.
How to do it
- Set a cable or resistance band at about face height.
- Grab it (rope or band) with both hands, arms extended.
- Pull toward your face, leading with the elbows, spreading your hands apart as you pull.
- Aim to finish with hands beside your ears, squeezing the rear delts and upper back.
- Control it back out. Use light weight, higher reps.
Why everyone should do them
- Strengthens the rear delts and upper back — muscles weakened by desk life.
- Improves posture and counters rounded shoulders.
- Keeps shoulders healthy and balanced for pressing.
- Add 2–3 sets a couple of times a week — they recover fast.
Face pulls are cheap insurance for your shoulders and posture — light weight, high reps, squeeze the rear delts. Almost everyone should do them.
Quick answers
What do face pulls work?
The rear delts and upper-back muscles. They improve posture, balance out all the pressing you do, and keep shoulders healthy.
How often should I do face pulls?
A couple of times a week, 2–3 sets of higher reps with light weight. They recover quickly, so frequency is fine.
