Exercising During Your Period: What to Know
Should you exercise on your period? For most people, yes — movement can even ease symptoms. Here’s how to work with your cycle rather than against it.
Training through your period
- It’s generally safe and often helpful — gentle-to-moderate exercise can ease cramps, bloating and low mood.
- Listen to your body — if you feel drained, lighter sessions, walking, yoga or stretching are perfectly fine.
- Some feel strong and can train normally — that’s fine too.
- Stay hydrated; iron loss over time makes iron-rich foods important.
Working with your cycle
Energy and strength can shift across the month. Many feel strongest in the first half (after the period) and more fatigued before/during it. You don’t need to obsess over "cycle syncing," but it’s reasonable to push harder when you feel good and ease off when you don’t. Severe, debilitating period pain isn’t something to just tolerate — see a doctor (disclaimer).
