Diet for Clear Skin: What the Evidence Says
Does what you eat show up on your skin? To some degree, yes — though skin is complex. Here’s the evidence-based take, minus the miracle claims.
What may help
- Lower high-glycemic / sugary foods — some evidence links blood-sugar spikes and refined carbs to acne (see GI).
- For some people, dairy (especially skim milk) may worsen acne — individual.
- Eat plenty of veg, fruit and omega-3 — antioxidants and healthy fats support skin.
- Hydration and enough protein support skin structure.
The honest limits
Diet is one factor, not the whole story — genetics, hormones, skincare, sleep and stress all matter. No food "cures" acne, and chocolate/oily food causing pimples is largely overstated. Persistent or severe acne is best treated by a dermatologist — don’t rely on diet alone (disclaimer). A healthy overall diet supports skin, but it’s not a magic cure.
Quick answers
What foods help clear skin?
Lower-sugar, whole-food diets with plenty of veg, fruit and omega-3 may help. Reducing high-GI foods (and dairy for some) can improve acne.
Does diet cause acne?
Diet is one contributing factor — high-sugar/GI foods and dairy affect some people — but genetics, hormones and skincare matter too. See a dermatologist for persistent acne.
