How to Deadlift With Good Form
The deadlift looks intimidating but it’s just picking a weight off the floor with a braced, neutral spine. Here’s how.
The setup
- Bar over mid-foot, feet hip-width.
- Hinge and grip just outside your legs.
- Chest up, flat (neutral) back, shoulders slightly ahead of the bar.
- Brace your core hard before you pull.
The pull
Push the floor away, keep the bar close to your body, and stand up — hips and shoulders rising together. Lock out by squeezing glutes, don’t lean back. Lower under control by hinging first.
A rounded lower back under heavy load is the real risk — keep it neutral and braced. Start light and nail the pattern before adding weight.
Quick answers
Is deadlifting bad for your back?
Done with a neutral, braced spine, it strengthens your back. Poor form and ego-loading cause problems — not the exercise itself.
How heavy should a beginner deadlift?
Start light enough to keep perfect form for all reps, then add small increments over time.
