Bulking vs Cutting: Which Should You Do First?
The classic dilemma: build muscle (bulk) or lose fat (cut) first? A quick look at your body fat answers it.
The simple rule
- Higher body fat (roughly 20%+ men, 30%+ women): cut first — get leaner, then build.
- Already lean-ish: bulk — you have room to add muscle before fat becomes an issue.
- New to training? You can often do both at once (recomp).
Do it slowly either way
A lean bulk (small surplus, ~0.25 kg/week) minimises fat gain; a moderate cut (~0.5 kg/week) protects muscle. Extreme versions of either just cost you muscle or add needless fat.
Don’t bounce between aggressive bulks and crash cuts. Slow, controlled phases beat the dirty-bulk-then-panic-cut cycle every time.
Quick answers
Can I build muscle and lose fat together?
Beginners and those returning after a break usually can. Advanced lifters generally pick one focus at a time.
How long should a bulk or cut last?
Long enough to make real progress — typically 8–16+ weeks — then reassess.
